Meet BKB Gowanus Route Setter: Lucas McKinnon

Lucas McKinnon is joining BKB as both a part-time route setter and JCT coach. While some credit his good looks and his longtime friendship with Oliver, our Route Setting Manager, for his hiring, Lucas has extensive credentials of his own.

How long have you been involved in the climbing world?

I have been climbing for about five years and setting for a little less than a year.

How has your setting style evolved over the years?

I imagine it will evolve in accordance with the theory of punctuated equilibrium

What are you most excited about for BKB?

Meeting/joining a new community that enjoys and contributes to the sport; supporting people who don’t look like me get into climbing; getting out of the SF Bay Area bubble and into a new one

What are your passions and hobbies off the wall?

Reading, writing, arithmetic (nope), skating (of the board variety), farming, surfing, wood-block printing, pen and ink illustration, rewatching The Wire, and part-time modeling – exclusively part-time – on principle.

Where are you from, and what brought you to NYC?

Santa Cruz, California. The swell was weak and I wanted to see what Delaware was about

What else are you doing at BKB?

Coaching JCT, washing holds, sorting bolts, finding ways to get free coffee

Who is your favorite climbing hero?

Oliver Miska. Just kidding. Ashima Shiraishi and Sharma (because, Santa Cruz)

Who is your favorite author/writer/thinker?

Franz Kafka, J.M. Coetzee, W.E.B. Du Bois, Gary Snyder, Rainer Maria Rilke

If you went to University, what did you study?
