“STOP DOING NOTHING”
A BKB Interview with FRIDGE, Multidisciplinary NYC Artist
At BKB, we want to highlight the badass humans of our community who are expanding their artistic and human potential. Therefore, we were psyched to sit down with BKB member and artist, FRIDGE. FRIDGE is a multidisciplinary New York City-based artist whose goals and creative expression knows no limits. His creative work—and his life—can be summarized by his primary motto: Stop Doing Nothing.
Like BKB, FRIDGE is stoked to inspire other people to overcome self-constructed barriers so they can take the next step in achieving their personal goals—whatever they may be.
Your first step? Stop Doing Nothing.
BKB: First things first, FRIDGE. How did you get started with your art, and how long have you been doing it?
FRIDGE: At the age of 16, I was at rock bottom. I was a total loser, I did nothing all day, had no money in my pocket, was the saddest I had ever been—and I had nothing going for myself. I was the biggest slacker in the world. However, one day I finally had had enough of how my life was going—and I wanted to make a change. I said to myself, “I have to STOP DOING NOTHING.” Then that became my life motto.
From that day on, I promised myself that I would change my life for the better and pursue all my dreams. I would go hard with my art. Because art has always been a big part of my life. The majority of my family are artists, so art is definitely in my blood. I started getting into graffiti about 10 years ago and I’ve been doing art full-time, for a living, for the past 2 years.
BKB: Who or what influences your creative work?
FRIDGE: NYC influences my work, the hustle, the grime, the glamour, the lifestyle, the history. I love to walk around the city and feel the energy to get inspired. Also, discovering I had the ability to create the ideas in my mind into real life art and product is what really inspired me to begin painting and creating more.
BKB: What is your favorite personal creation (and why)?
FRIDGE: My current favorite project of all time is collaborating with GSHOCK and creating my own signature watch. It’s been an amazing project, and I’ve been able to see my life come full circle. It’s crazy because I started wearing GSHOCKS when I was very young. I went from being a teen—seeing all the designs and collaborations—to eventually being able to do my own first solo art show at the GSHOCK store in Soho. From there, I was able to create my own signature watch and meet the creator of GSHOCK. This project proved to me that anything is possible—and that my art is being recognized. Also, being the youngest artist to create his own collaborative watch with GSHOCK is pretty legendary.
BKB: That is an incredible project. Looking ahead, what goals do you have for your art?
FRIDGE: Do more gallery shows, collaborate with more brands, have some art in museums, bigger scale artwork and more social artwork to inspire our human race.
BKB: Is there anything else you want us to or the BKB community to know about you?
FRIDGE: STOP DOING NOTHING and follow me on instagram
BKB: Done! And lastly, a BKB classic question: What’s the weirdest thing about you?
FRIDGE: …I enjoy the smell of gasoline.
